As Leader

The Pen Club
Jack Stoneham – alto saxophone
Felix Bornholdt – piano
Ashley Stoneham - drums

Long-form free improvisation is punctured sporadically by pre-composed, rhythmic loops in a location and order that is also improvised. The outcome is a macro structure emerging from micro, stream of conscious improvisation.

The Pen Club released their first album Data Retrieval in 2019 on the Eupcaccia Records label.

“Saxophone, piano, drums and a whole lot of talent, creativity, and chemistry is sometimes all it takes to create something utterly bewildering.” Can This Even Be Called Music

Walk
Toby Graham – vocals
Jack Stoneham – alto saxophone
Hilary Geddes – guitar
Linus Foley – piano
Jacques Emery – double bass
Ashley Stoneham – drums

Walk is music about going for a stroll and thinking the same repetitive thoughts. Many different short cyclical, repetitive and often meditative forms are trodden on. Sometimes the mood is mellow and the scenery along the walk can be enjoyed. Sometimes the walkers have stressful jobs and places to be and the walk is more manic.

We take our favourite jazz standards and stretch them out, cut them up, slice, dice and rebuild them. Intensely loud and raucous, or spacious and barely audible, our approach is extreme commitment to spontaneous collective invention.
Melodies and bridges interweave and overlap, tempos and feels bump and grind, songs explode into fragments and reassemble into new abstractions.

“Showing a collective flair for balancing restraint and abandon, they took the piece from rain-on-the-windowpane melancholy all the way to furious exhilaration.” John Shand, SMH

Sagrada Familiar:
Charlie Sundborn - vocals, sax
Sidonie Spring-winer - vocals
Ashley Stoneham - drums
Dave Quinn - bass
Roshan Kumarage - keys
Kieren Brereton - guitar

Reigning from the suburbs of Sydney (and Wilton), Sagrada Familiar is a seven-piece group that blends our various musical interests into one delicious concoction.

“…this week sees their first official release with debut album, Unfamiliar. It’s a frequently breathtaking collection of downbeat, hip-hop infused groovers that is just as likely to put your mind at ease whilst sipping on a jazzy cocktail as it is to get you up and dancing.” Pile Rats
